Child Growth

In this lab, we consider data on growth of young children in the Philippines. These children were at high risk of stunting due to malnutrition (the Philippines is among the top (or bottom, depending on your point of view) 10 countries for stunting in children under 5).

Your job is to explore factors related to height in children followed from birth to age 2. Variables in the data file available on Sakai, cebu.xlsx, include the following.

Our interest is in examining child growth in this study. All predictors (except weight and visit) should be considered as important potential explanatory factors that may influence height or the pattern of growth over time. Continuous variables like the child’s age or mother’s height may have nonlinear effects on height, so be sure to explore appropriate functional forms.

Prepare a written report that describes the factors related to growth of children over time. Your report should include the following.

  1. Clear specification of any models (using equations) used to explore the associations of interest, including prior distributions if applicable
  2. Clearly-labeled tables and graphical displays describing the data and communicating your findings (graphs are especially important if some predictors are best modeled using splines, polynomials, or other nonlinear forms)
  3. Uncertainty quantification around estimates of interest (no point estimates without uncertainty!)
  4. Illustrative growth trajectories of a “typical child” as well as of children at roughly the 5th, 10th, 25th, 75th, 90th, and 95th %iles of height (please explain how you determined these percentiles in your report).
  5. Evidence of adequacy of model fit and evaluation of suitability of modeling assumptions
  6. Clear description of results in language accessible to a general scientifically-savvy reader (e.g., someone reading a science article in the BBC or CNN apps)
  7. Reproducible R code for your entire analysis (ideally a single .Rmd will produce your entire report)

This report is due by the beginning of class on Friday, October 18 via upload to Sakai (one submission per group). The minimum font size is 11 point and maximum number of pages is 6.
